Network Configuration Information for U of MN

Introduction: This page is a quick reference containing configuration information for University of Minnesota internet connections. It is intended for people who know how to configure their TCP/IP software and need generic U of MN configuration information. If you do not understand any of the terms on this page you should contact your network administrator for assistance.

DNS addresses and Time servers
Primary: 128.101.101.101
Secondary: 134.84.84.84

Netmask 255.255.255.0 for IP addresses beginning with 134.84 or 128.101
255.255.255.128 for IP addresses beginning with 160.94
dial-in users should not set this value

Gateway/Router * Same as your IP address, but the last number is replaced by "254".
Example: if your IP address is 160.94.190.3, your gateway will be 160.94.190.254.
dial-in users should not set this value

IP address * You can get this information from your network administrator.
If you use DHCP this is assigned automatically.
dial-in and DHCP users should not set this value

Internet ID Your Internet ID (also refered to as username or login or x.500); the part of your e-mail address before the"@" sign. Usually the first 4-5 letters of your last name followed by numbers, i.e. user1234 or userx123.

Mail Account (for configuring Eudora, WebMail, and POPmail) <Internet ID>@<Internet ID>.email.umn.edu, where <Internet ID> is your x.500 ID. It is also sometimes called your user name. (i.e. user1234 or userx123). Yes, you must put your Internet ID both before and after the @ sign.

Mail Address (your UMN email address) <Internet ID>@tc.umn.edu, where <Internet ID> is your Internet ID, or x.500 ID.

SMTP (outgoing mail) server
smtp-gw.tc.umn.edu

Authenticated SMTP Server (for non-UMN connections)
smtp.umn.edu.
Use this outgoing server when you are connecting through an ISP other than the U of M (Qwest, AT&T, etc). Your email client must support SSL (currently, Netscape Mail, Outlook Express, and Outlook all support SSL).

POP (incoming mail) server and Telnet (interactive) host
<Internet ID>.email.umn.edu, where <Internet ID> is your Internet ID (i.e. user1234 or userx123)

Reply-To address
This field should contain an e-mail address, for example <Internet ID>@tc.umn.edu (again, where <Internet ID> is your internet ID, (i.e. user1234 or userx123). You could also leave this field blank.

NNTP (news) server
news.tc.umn.edu

WWW servers
www.umn.edu or www.umn.edu/tc

IRC servers
irc.umn.edu or irc.tc.umn.edu

Users dialing in with a SLIP or PPP connection should note that the netmask, gateway, and IP address will be provided by the SLIP/PPP server; TCP/IP software should not be configured with any of this information, since it will be obtained automatically. Attempting to hard-code an IP address for use with a U of MN dial-up connection will result in a failed TCP/IP connection.
